GTA 6 Release: Will The Game Delay? Everything Else We Know

GTA 6 is getting closer now that 2025 has arrived. The next big Grand Theft Auto game from Rockstar has been in the works for more than ten years, following the release of GTA 5 in 2012. This new game will take players back to Vice City for another exciting open-world adventure.

Grand Theft Auto is famous for its lively world design, open-road driving, memorable characters, and thrilling actions.

After the surprise release of the GTA 6 trailer in December 2023, we now know the game will raise the stakes even higher. The Miami-inspired city looks bigger and better than before in the trailer.

With the huge progress in technology since GTA’s 2002 release, we’re ready to explore Vice City in amazing 4K. We have a detailed breakdown of the GTA 6 trailer if you’re concerned you missed any important details.

Even over a year later, GTA 6 is still on everyone’s minds, and we’re eager to find out what Rockstar has planned next.

Some analysts are “hoping” that GTA 6 will set a $100 price, and it’s expected to be one of the biggest games of the year if it meets its release target. Keep reading for all the latest information we know about GTA 6 in 2025, from the launch date to the expected platforms and more.

GTA 6 release date window: 2025 confirmed

GTA 6’s release date is now set for Fall 2025. Before this, the trailer only mentioned a general 2025 release window, with Fall confirmed later in a Take-Two financial report in May.

This seemed to end rumors from Kotaku that GTA 6 might be delayed into 2026. However, former Rockstar developer Obbe Vermeij recently shared that Rockstar “is probably not in a position to determine whether they will hit 2025 until May-ish,” mentioning the delay of GTA 4, which was announced just about four months before its release.

Vermeij also said that GTA 6 will sell for “10+ years” because “there’s no competition,” so Rockstar is “not going to release the game until they’re 100% happy.”

The idea of a delay started circulating in early 2024 after it was announced that Rockstar had brought all employees back to full-time in-office work five days a week. Many developers expressed concern about how this might impact the game’s development.

Though there is still some uncertainty about whether the game will meet the planned release, for now, the GTA 6 release date remains set for Fall 2025.

GTA 6 platforms: PS5 and Xbox Series X/S confirmed

It has been confirmed that GTA 6 will be released on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2025.

This information came from an official press release from Take-Two, which says: “GTA 6 is coming to PlayStation 5 computer entertainment systems and Xbox Series X|S games and entertainment systems in 2025.” Very exciting!

With the PS5 Pro now available, we don’t know yet if GTA 6 will be enhanced for the PS5 Pro. A tech expert has suggested that it probably won’t run at 60fps on the PS5 Pro, even if it has “higher quality visuals.” We’ll have to wait and see what happens.

Will GTA 6 be on PS4 and Xbox One?

As mentioned in the official press release, GTA 6 is currently planned for release only on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, and it will not be available on PS4 or Xbox One when it launches in 2025. This makes it a current-gen exclusive.

Will GTA 6 have a PC release?

At the moment, there is no mention of a PC version, which suggests that, like some previous GTA games, it will first come to consoles and then be released on PC later. Our guess is that PC players might have to wait until 2026 to play the game on their platform.

Our hopes for a quick PC release are now pretty low. A former developer said that GTA 6 on PC will likely take some time, with the PS5 release being the main focus since Rockstar is concentrating on “what sells.”

Another former developer mentioned that the GTA 6 PC launch probably won’t happen for “a long time.” We’ll update you if anything changes, but for now, PC players can enjoy all the major GTA games on PC while they wait for the new release.

GTA 6 characters: Introducing Lucia

In the official trailer, we were introduced to the characters of GTA 6, with a focus on the first female lead, Lucia. Although there is still a lot we don’t know about her, the trailer gives us a few clues. Lucia is seen wearing prison clothing, indicating that she’s had some legal trouble in the past.

Lucia is shown in several scenes with an unnamed male character who looks to play a major role in the game. He has been called both Jason and James in previous rumors, but his real name has not been confirmed yet.

The two characters seem to share a strong connection, and they talk about trust as they get involved in criminal activities together, suggesting a Bonnie and Clyde-like relationship.

GTA 6 location: Vice City

GTA 6 is taking players back to Vice City. While the original game was set in 1986, the 2025 version will take place in what seems to be a modern-day setting. Rockstar has shared that the game will be set in the state of Leonida, which is home to the “neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond.”

The game is promised to be the “biggest, most immersive evolution of Grand Theft Auto yet,” and Vice City will be part of a larger map in GTA 6.

The trailer has already shown us a beautiful version of Vice City, with a take on rural Florida that’s as wild as the real thing. We see some familiar places like Starfish Island, and it remains to be seen if we can visit old spots like the Malibu Club, Ocean View Hotel, and Little Haiti.

Fans have been comparing the new trailer to locations from the original Vice City, highlighting how detailed the updated version of the city is.

GTA 6 announcement: When was GTA 6 confirmed?

The first official announcement of GTA 6 came in February 2022 when Rockstar Games revealed that the game is “well underway” as part of a GTA 5 and GTA Online update.

The message stated that GTA 6 was in “active development,” and Rockstar expressed their thanks for the support, saying, “On behalf of our entire team, we thank you all for your support and cannot wait to step into the future with you!”

In August 2022, Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two Interactive, confirmed again that GTA 6 development was “well underway” as part of the company’s financial results.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick made big promises for what GTA 6 would achieve, saying, “With the development of the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series well underway, the Rockstar Games team is determined to once again set creative benchmarks for the series, our industry, and for all entertainment, just as the label has done with every one of their frontline releases.”

Will GTA 6 be delayed?

After the GTA 6 leak, there were concerns about how the intrusion might affect the development of the new Grand Theft Auto game. However, Rockstar has confirmed in an official statement that the hack will not impact the production of GTA 6 or the ongoing security of GTA 5 and GTA Online.

“At this time, we do not anticipate any disruption to our live game services nor any long-term effect on the development of our ongoing projects.

Our work on the next Grand Theft Auto game will continue as planned, and we remain as committed as ever to delivering an experience to you, our players, that truly exceeds your expectations.”
